Artisan Sourdough Bread Recipe

This is a great recipe for trying out your sourdough start for the first time, and one that will become a favorite!

  • Pizza Stone or Iron Skillet
  • 1-2 Cups natural leavening (sourdough starter)
  • 2 1/2 Cups water
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 4 Cups Flour (Heaping Cups)
  1. Mix all ingredients in a Bosch (or by hand) for 10 minutes

  2. Let the dough rise until double for 6-12 hours.

  3. Put a wet cloth on top of the dough, or put dough in a bowl on top of a pot of hot water, to keep it from forming a crusty layer

  4. Once dough as doubled, use water on your hands and countertop to form dough into a round loaf.

  5. Place it on a sheet of parchment paper.

  6. Preheat oven to 500℉ with a pizza stone or cast iron skillet in the oven.

  7. Pick up the bread with the parchment paper and place it on the stone or skillet

  8. At the same time place a pan of ice in the bottom of the oven to create steam. Or spray the bread generously with water before placing it in the oven.

  9. Turn oven down to 425 ℉ and bake for 20 minutes

  10. Turn oven down to 375º F. and bake for 20-25 more minutes
